What
are specialist paint effects?
There are a huge variety of paint effects - these can range from colour washing,
where a thinner, more transparent layer of colour is laid over a base colour;
to more complex effects where stone, wood and fabrics are depicted. Other
paint effects are trompe l'oeil and murals, these are more pictorial and can
be very complex.
Paint effects can be subtle or bold, they can imitate a piece so closely it becomes difficult to tell whether it is the real object or an effect, or they can act almost as a pastiche - for example many of the semi-precious stones, such as malachite, lapis lazuli or porphry would naturally only occur as small pieces, and would be used in small quantities as an inlay - pieta dura for example. However, their colours can be so lucious that they can make a very bold statement. The pot shown left for example, has been done in lapis lazuli effect, but looks stunning.
The most common paint effects are colour washing which can be very subtle or very bold and provides an excellent backdrop for pictures and your furniture. Ragging, rolling, dragging, are all means of creating a 'broken effect' on your walls, again depending on the colours chosen these can be bold or subtle. These types of effect are good on less than perfect walls, where the broken texture of the paint effect deflects the eye from any defect in the wall surface.
Paint effects mimicing natural materials include stone work, precious stones, marble and wood - some examples are shown below:

Stencilling
has become less popular in recent times, but stencilling can encompass a wide
variety of styles and techniques - ranging from flowers and vines to more
complex pictures. It can provide a monochrome effect
adding
a pattern and depth to a wall, or again be something very flamboyant. There
are two examples here, one was for an etnically themed room (nicknamed 'Africa');
using black stencils of stylised lizards, birds etc on a background of turmeric
yellow and terracotta; t
he
second was for a 'snug' where the theme was taken from a couple of red and
gold balinese sarongs.
The use of paint effects, and which paint effect to use is only limited by our imaginations, so if you would like to talk to us more about paint effects and how we can create a unique home for you please contact us.
How
much does it cost?
It is difficult to provide a set price list for paint effects, since it depends
on the complexity of the paint effect chosen, the size of the area to be painted
and how much preparation is required. We will come and meet you and discuss
your requirements fully. We will then provide you with a sample or samples
and a full quote.
